Houston Children's Charity is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Greater Houston's underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered.
Through our Chariots for Children van program we provide special purpose vehicles used to help rescue children living in the streets and take children from shelters to/from school and after-school events or work. Including our 2007 van recipients, Houston Children's Charity has awarded 68 vans and 2 trucks to 59 agencies and a foster family, at a cost of $1,921,923 over the past decade.
Through an array of capital programs and operating support Houston Children's Charity has provided $6.8 Million to program services for over 75 agencies. In addition, the Becker Emergency Fund has provided over $60,000 to assist families in an emergency crisis situation.
By arranging healthcare, wheelchairs, prostheses and related support, Houston Children's Charity helps children recover from, and cope with, debilitating disease and injury. For example, this year Houston Children's Charity assisted Mamoona Ghaffer, a teenage girl who suffered from a terrible acid burn on her face and neck. She was in need of a prostheses for her right eye and Houston Children's Charity was happy to lend a hand. Mamoona was referred to Houston Children's Charity from the office of The House of Charity.
Thanks to the generosity of our many supporters, scholarships are being provided to enable underprivileged youth to attend college, potentially breaking the cycle of poverty in their families. For example, this year Houston Children's Charity provided four scholarships to deserving Houston are students through the Houston Children's Charity Scholarship Fund.
By holding Christmas toy distributions, an Easter Party, a Baseball Outing, and a Christmas Party, Houston Children's Charity helps disadvantaged children expand their awareness and experience some of the joys of life. We also show them that someone, somewhere, cares about them, a rare feeling among many of these children.
In doing this work, Houston Children's Charity benefits from a "hands on" Board of Directors, which provides over 40% of the total funding. This combines careful decision-making with rapid responses to efficiently and effectively meet children's needs.
Our supporters come from all walks of life. They are people who understand that caring means giving of themselves. You will often see members of the Board of Directors, many of the busiest and most high profile executives in Houston, working hand-in-hand among volunteers chaperoning children at our Annual Children's Events. More often than not, our volunteers feel they receive much more than they give.
The Charity seeks an ever-broadening base of support, dedicated sponsors and committed volunteers to expand its ability to help children. There are numerous avenues of participation available for any individual or corporation willing to provide resources to assist children. Houston Children's Charity measures success by the number of children's lives that are touched, and that is dependent upon how many of you, as individuals or companies, are willing to give of your resources, talents and time. |
