We measure our success by the number of children whose lives are touched by our efforts each year. Houston Children’s Charity is served by its Founder, President & CEO Laura Ward, and a steadfast Board of Directors who carefully steward the resources of our donors to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of Houston’s children.
With an ambitious goal to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered, we seek to expand our base of support through dedicated sponsors and committed volunteers to strengthen our ability to help children. Our supporters come from all walks of life and understand that caring means giving of themselves. There are numerous ways to be a part of our work. It’s September in Houston, which means one thing: the Astros are gearing up for the stretch run. ⚾
So while we’re rooting for this year’s team, we thought we’d take a trip through the Houston Children’s Charity archives and celebrate a few Houston baseball legends who have stepped away from the diamond and stepped up for Houston’s children.
Jeff Bagwell. Craig Biggio. Larry Dierker. Nolan Ryan.
Hall of Famers. All-Stars. Houston icons. And, most importantly to us, people who have lent their time, visibility, and support to Houston Children’s Charity over the years.
For 30 years, Houston Children’s Charity has been fortunate to have extraordinary people from every corner of Houston answer the call when it matters.
And when the lineup includes Bagwell, Biggio, Dierker and Ryan?

On October 17, at Houston Children’s Charity’s 30th Anniversary Gala, we are proud to honor Gary Petersen, one of Houston’s most beloved philanthropists and a steadfast champion of our mission. 🌟
For decades, Gary has led with compassion, generosity and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of Houston’s underserved children. His extraordinary dedication to our community has inspired countless acts of kindness and helped create brighter futures for families across Greater Houston.
Long before Houston Children’s Charity became the organization we know today, it was simply a bold idea with a promise to help children in need.
In 1997, just one year after Houston Children’s Charity was founded, the legendary Ray Charles headlined the organization’s very first Black Tie Gala. More than 650 guests came together for an unforgettable evening that raised critical funds, built community trust, and helped establish a tradition that continues today.
Thirty years later, those Gala nights still bring people together for one purpose: ensuring Houston’s children have the opportunities, resources, and support they deserve.
Sometimes, history begins with a single performance... and a community willing to believe.
On this day in 2017, Hurricane Harvey reached Houston, beginning one of the most devastating chapters in our city’s history—and one of its most extraordinary displays of compassion.
In the aftermath, thousands of Houston families were displaced from their homes. And when those families eventually returned, thousands of children would need something very basic waiting for them: a bed of their own.
Houston Astros star Carlos Correa stepped forward with Houston Children’s Charity to establish the Hurricane Harvey Children’s Relief Fund, setting an ambitious goal of $500,000 to provide 5,000 beds for children impacted by the storm.
Then Houston did what Houston does.
People gave. Partners rallied. And The Astros Foundation stepped up with the final $100,000 needed to take the campaign beyond its goal.
Today, on the anniversary of Harvey, we remember the devastation—but we also remember the extraordinary people who answered the call when Houston’s children needed them most.
$500,000. 5,000 beds. One extraordinary community.
