We measure our success by the number of children whose lives are touched by our efforts each year. Houston Children’s Charity is served by its Founder, President & CEO Laura Ward, and a steadfast Board of Directors who carefully steward the resources of our donors to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of Houston’s children.
With an ambitious goal to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered, we seek to expand our base of support through dedicated sponsors and committed volunteers to strengthen our ability to help children. Our supporters come from all walks of life and understand that caring means giving of themselves. There are numerous ways to be a part of our work. Let’s go back to 2006.
Houston Children’s Charity was celebrating its 10th anniversary—and apparently nobody told them they were supposed to start small.
More than 600 guests filled the Hyatt Regency Houston. Sue and Lester Smith were honored. Commander Scott Kelly joined the celebration. Houston sports stars came out to support the cause. And Huey Lewis & The News kept everyone dancing into the night.
But behind the party was something much bigger.
That year, HCC pledged $1 million to establish the Family Emergency Fund at Texas Children’s Cancer Center, helping families facing the unimaginable financial challenges that can come with a child’s cancer diagnosis.
And by the end of the 10th Anniversary Gala, another record had been broken:
$2.2 million in net proceeds.
It was the largest amount an HCC Gala had ever raised.
Dave Ward even jokingly suggested that Laura might want to retire while she was on top.
She declined. 😉
Good thing she did.
Twenty years later, as we prepare to celebrate HCC’s 30th Anniversary Gala, it’s remarkable to look back at just how far the promise had already come by year ten—and how much further it would go.
10 years down. $2.2 million raised in one remarkable night. And they were only getting started.
